Programme profile

This programmes is a profile of the BBA International Business of Rotterdam Business School.

Doing business with Asia in the international market is an interesting but tough challenge. Many countries in Asia are becoming increasingly important trading partners. Therefore specialists are needed who are well equipped to take on this challenge. You will learn about the enormous diversity of other cultures and learn to deal with social and cultural differences in order to enter into trade relations with business partners worldwide.

Do you see your future in the world of international trade? You enjoy making new contacts. You are enterprising and can quickly and easily adapt to changing circumstances. Besides English you also want to learn Mandarin, Japanese or Indonesian. If so International Business for Asia (formerly known as Trade Management for Asia), could be for you. Besides concepts such as business strategy, marketing, economics, cross-cultural management and finance, you will also receive training in selling techniques and negotiation skills.

An International Business for Asia graduate is flexible and ready to travel extensively in positions entailing frequent international contact. In many cases your home base will be outside the Netherlands. The International Business for Asia programme perfectly caters to this aspect by offering students the opportunity to participate in exchange programmes and placements in Asia

Programme content

The first year is intended as an introduction to the study programme and profession. In the first semester you will work on projects that focus on “Doing Business in Asia” and finding a Dutch market for Asian products. In the third quarter you will carry out a practical assignment whereby you analyse an existing company with regard to management and organisational aspects. You finish the year with setting up a virtual Trade Company in which you compete with other groups of students.

In the second year you start and run your own international company, together with your fellow students. In the third quarter you liquidate this company; if all goes well, with a profit. You will also complete a preliminary placement in the fourth quarter. The third year is devoted to Export Marketing and a half year studying abroad after which you will stay abroad to complete a placement. The last half year of your training will be spent on your graduation project at a company doing business with Asia.

In the fourth year of the programme you do a placement in the country of the Asian language of your choice.
